As pet parents, it's natural to worry when our furry companions aren't acting like themselves. But how do you know if it’s a true emergency or something that can wait for a regular vet visit? Understanding the difference between emergency and non-emergency care could save your pet’s life—and help you avoid unnecessary stress.

🏥 What Counts as a Pet Emergency?

If your pet is experiencing any of the following, head to an emergency vet immediately:

  • Difficulty breathing or choking

  • Seizures or sudden collapse

  • Uncontrolled bleeding

  • Ingestion of toxins, including chocolate, medications, or household cleaners

  • Hit by a car or serious trauma

  • Bloated or distended abdomen—especially in dogs, this could indicate life-threatening bloat (GDV)

  • Not urinating or struggling to urinate

  • Sudden paralysis or inability to stand

Time is critical in these situations. If you're ever unsure, it’s better to call an emergency clinic for guidance.

🩺 Non-Emergency Pet Issues

Some issues can wait until your vet’s regular hours:

  • Itchy skin or ear infections

  • Mild vomiting or diarrhea (without other symptoms)

  • Limping without signs of severe pain

  • Loss of appetite for less than 24 hours

  • Chronic issues like arthritis or allergies

That said, don’t ignore symptoms that persist or worsen. If your pet isn’t improving, schedule an appointment sooner rather than later.

🐾 Tips to Be Prepared

  • Know your emergency vet: Locate the nearest 24/7 clinic before you need one.

  • Have a pet first-aid kit at home.

  • Keep poison control numbers handy, like the ASPCA Animal Poison Control (888-426-4435).

  • Stay calm—your pet takes cues from your energy.

Being prepared and informed helps you act quickly and confidently in any situation. Your pet is part of the family—knowing when and where to seek help ensures they get the care they deserve.
