Keep Those Paws Cozy: Protecting Your Dog in Cold Weather
When temperatures drop, your dog’s paws need a little extra TLC! Cold weather, ice, snow and sidewalk salt can cause irritation, dryness, cracking and discomfort. With a few simple precautions, you can help keep your four-legged friend comfortable all season long.
Protect paws before heading outside. Dog booties provide an excellent barrier against freezing temperatures, ice and harsh chemicals. If your pup isn’t a fan of footwear, a pet-safe paw balm can help moisturize and protect their pads. Introduce booties gradually and reward your dog with treats to make the experience more enjoyable.
Watch out for ice and salt. Deicing products can irritate paws and may be harmful if your dog licks them off. Whenever possible, choose pet-friendly walking routes and avoid heavily salted areas. Keep walks shorter during especially cold weather, and watch for signs of discomfort, such as limping, lifting paws or refusing to walk.
Make paw care part of your routine. After every winter walk, wipe your dog’s paws with a warm, damp cloth to remove salt, ice and debris. Check between the toes for ice buildup, redness or small cuts, then dry the paws thoroughly. Keeping the fur between paw pads neatly trimmed can also help prevent ice balls from forming.
Know when it’s time to head inside. Dogs can experience cold-related injuries,
including frostbite, so pay attention to changing weather conditions and your pet’s comfort level. If you notice persistent redness, swelling, cracking or limping, contact your veterinarian.
Winter adventures can still be fun with a little extra care! By protecting your pup’s paws and checking them regularly, you can help keep those happy feet healthy, cozy and ready for the next walk.
