Just like people, dogs feel their best when they’re at a healthy weight. Maintaining your furry friend’s ideal size isn’t just about looks — it’s about keeping their heart, joints, and overall health in top shape. Here are a few easy ways to help your dog stay fit and fabulous.
1. Watch the Treats (but don’t cut them out!): Treats are great for training and bonding, but they should make up no more than 10% of your dog’s daily calories. Try swapping store-bought snacks for healthy options like baby carrots, green beans, or small pieces of apple (no seeds!).
2. Stick to Measured Meals: Free-feeding (leaving food out all day) can lead to overeating. Instead, measure your dog’s meals based on their weight, age, and activity level. If you’re unsure how much to feed, your vet can help you determine the perfect portion size.
3. Keep Them Moving: Daily exercise is key! Whether it’s a brisk walk, a game of fetch, or a trip to the dog park, keeping your pup active helps burn calories and keeps their muscles strong. Aim for at least 30 minutes of activity each day — more if your dog is high-energy.
4. Schedule Regular Weigh-Ins: It’s easy for weight to creep up unnoticed, especially under all that fur. Weigh your dog monthly or ask your vet to check their weight at visits. Catching small changes early can make a big difference.
5. Look for the Signs: You should be able to feel (but not see) your dog’s ribs, and they should have a visible waist when viewed from above. If your dog’s looking a little round or has lost that tuck, it may be time to adjust their diet or exercise routine.
Keeping your dog at a healthy weight is one of the best gifts you can give them. A balanced diet, regular activity, and a little mindful monitoring go a long way toward a longer, happier, tail-wagging life. 🐶❤️
