Fall Grooming Tips for a Happy, Healthy Dog

As the leaves begin to change and cooler temperatures arrive, it is a great time to give your dog’s grooming routine a seasonal refresh. Fall brings its own set of challenges, from muddy paws to pesky burrs, but a little extra care can keep your pup looking and feeling their best.

Brush regularly. Fall walks can leave behind leaves, twigs and other debris that become tangled in your dog’s coat. Regular brushing helps remove dirt, prevent mats and keeps their coat healthy. Dogs with longer or thicker fur may need more frequent brushing.

Check those paws. Cooler, wet weather means muddy yards and soggy walks. After outdoor adventures, wipe your dog’s paws and check between their toes for dirt, burrs or small objects that could cause irritation.

Don’t skip the bath. A muddy fall adventure may call for a bath, but avoid overbathing. Too many baths can dry out your dog’s skin. Use a shampoo made specifically for dogs and make sure their coat is thoroughly dried afterward.

Keep nails trimmed. Your dog may spend less time walking on hard surfaces as the weather changes, which can mean nails do not wear down as quickly. Regular trims help prevent discomfort and make walking easier.

Watch for pests. Fleas and ticks do not necessarily disappear when summer ends. Continue checking your dog after outdoor activities and follow your veterinarian’s recommendations for year-round parasite prevention.

Fall is a wonderful season for exploring with your four-legged friend. With a little grooming maintenance, your dog can enjoy those crisp walks, colorful leaves and muddy adventures in comfort and style!
