How Often Should You Groom Your Dog in Summer vs. Winter?

Keeping your dog well-groomed is important year-round, but the seasons can change how often your furry friend needs a little extra care. Summer and winter both bring unique challenges for your dog’s coat, skin, and comfort.

In the summer, most dogs benefit from grooming every 4 to 6 weeks. Warmer temperatures can lead to shedding, tangled fur, and trapped dirt from outdoor adventures. Regular brushing helps remove loose hair and keeps air circulating through the coat. Baths can also help wash away allergens, mud, and bacteria, especially if your dog enjoys swimming or spending time outside. Be careful not to shave double-coated breeds too short, as their coats actually help regulate body temperature and protect against sunburn.

During the winter, grooming is still essential, but many dogs can go a bit longer between full grooming appointments, usually every 6 to 8 weeks depending on breed and coat type. Dry winter air can lead to flaky skin, and snow or ice can collect around paws and fur. Regular brushing helps distribute natural oils and prevents painful matting under sweaters or jackets. Keeping paw hair trimmed can also reduce ice buildup and salt irritation.

No matter the season, routine nail trims, ear cleaning, and brushing at home are important for your dog’s overall health. Long-haired breeds or highly active dogs may need more frequent grooming year-round.

A consistent grooming schedule not only keeps your dog looking great, but also helps them stay comfortable, healthy, and happy through every season.
