As temperatures rise and summer settles in, keeping your dog well-groomed becomes more than just a cosmetic routine. It plays an important role in their comfort, health, and overall happiness. With a few simple habits, you can help your pup stay cool, clean, and ready to enjoy the season.

One of the most important aspects of summer grooming is brushing. Regular brushing removes loose fur, prevents matting, and allows air to circulate through your dog’s coat. This is especially important for long-haired or double-coated breeds, as mats can trap heat and lead to skin irritation. Even short-haired dogs benefit from brushing, as it helps distribute natural oils and keeps their coat healthy.

Bathing is another key part of a summer grooming routine, but it should be done in moderation. A bath every four to six weeks is typically enough, unless your dog gets particularly dirty from outdoor adventures. Use a gentle, dog-specific shampoo to avoid drying out their skin. After baths, make sure your dog is thoroughly dried to prevent hotspots, which are more common in warm, humid weather.

Many pet owners assume shaving their dog will keep them cooler, but that is not always the case. A dog’s coat often acts as insulation, protecting them from both heat and sunburn. Instead of shaving, consider a light trim, especially around areas like the paws, belly, and ears, to keep things neat and comfortable. If you’re unsure, a professional groomer can recommend what’s best for your dog’s specific breed.

Don’t forget about nail care. Dogs tend to be more active in the summer, but that doesn’t always mean their nails wear down naturally. Overgrown nails can cause discomfort and even affect how your dog walks. Regular trimming helps keep their paws healthy and ready for long walks.

Ear cleaning is also important, particularly if your dog enjoys swimming. Moisture can get trapped in the ears, creating an environment for infections. Gently cleaning and drying your dog’s ears after water play can help prevent issues before they start.

Finally, keep an eye on your dog’s skin. Summer can bring fleas, ticks, and other irritants. Regular grooming sessions are a great time to check for any unusual bumps, redness, or pests. Staying consistent with flea and tick prevention will also help protect your dog during peak season.

With a little extra attention and care, summer grooming can be simple and enjoyable for both you and your dog. Not only will your pup look their best, but they’ll feel their best too, ready to soak up all the sunshine the season has to offer.
