Keeping Pets Safe and Warm During a Snowstorm

When winter storms roll in, our pets rely on us more than ever to keep them safe, warm and comfortable. While snowy days can be fun, they also come with real risks for animals, especially during extreme cold and heavy snowfall.

First, limit your pet’s time outdoors. Even pets with thick fur can be vulnerable to frostbite and hypothermia when temperatures drop. Keep walks short, stick to shoveled paths when possible and watch for signs of discomfort like shivering, lifting paws or refusing to walk. If it’s too cold for you, it’s probably too cold for them.

Create a cozy indoor space. Make sure your pet has a warm, draft-free place to rest, away from cold floors or windows. Extra blankets or a padded bed can help maintain body heat. Older pets and those with health conditions may need even more warmth and comfort during storms.

Protect their paws. Snow, ice and salt can irritate and damage paws. Wipe your pet’s feet after being outside to remove ice, salt and chemicals. Pet-safe booties or paw balm can also help prevent cracking and irritation.

Never leave pets unattended in cars or outdoors. Cars can become dangerously cold quickly, and outdoor shelters are often not enough protection during a snowstorm. Bring pets inside whenever possible and keep them part of the family during severe weather.

Stock up and stay prepared. Have extra food, medications and fresh water on hand in case travel becomes difficult. Make sure collars and microchip information are up to date in case your pet gets lost during a storm.

Snowstorms can be beautiful, but they can also be dangerous. With a little preparation and extra care, you can help ensure your pets stay safe, warm and happy all winter long.
