Summer is the perfect time to treat your furry friend to something cool and refreshing. While many human snacks are off-limits for dogs, there are plenty of safe and healthy options that can help them beat the heat.
Fresh fruits like watermelon (seedless), blueberries, strawberries and apple slices are packed with vitamins and make great low-calorie treats. Frozen banana slices or plain pumpkin puree frozen into bite-sized pieces can also provide a tasty way to cool down on hot days.
Vegetables such as carrots, cucumber slices and green beans are another excellent choice. They are crunchy, hydrating and full of nutrients. For an extra-special treat, try freezing low-sodium chicken broth in ice cube trays or making homemade pupsicles with plain yogurt and dog-safe fruits.
Remember that moderation is key. Treats should make up no more than 10% of your dog's daily diet. Always avoid foods that are toxic to dogs, including grapes, raisins, cherries, chocolate, xylitol, onions and avocados.
If you're unsure whether a particular food is safe for your pet, consult your veterinarian before offering it. With a few healthy summer snacks and plenty of fresh water, your dog can stay happy, hydrated and cool all season long.
